How Do (vending, Change) Machines Know The Difference Between A $1 And A $5?

I never really thought about it until today. does the machine see something we don’t? I mean they’re the same size, they just have different things printed on them. How does the machine know?

    it scans the serial #, thats why it spits it out if its krinkled!
