years ago weight was the sole determinating factor. but now some machines use the same technology that metal detectors use. The can determine size weight and material used thereby verifying the type of coin and its value. Pretty cool to see them make the machine to be honest

some machines use a slide which seperates the coins as the y proceed to their assigned destination.
other machines use a weight-size mechanisism to seperate the coins.

There’s a bunch of little tiny people inside that make sure what the coins are and then make change and dispense the desired products.
