Is There Any Real Reason Vending Machines Are Not Made To Accept Pennies?

May 8th, 2009 Posted in Información General

youd think it would make some serious sense for them to accept pennies right? i save all my loose change for the vending machines at work but im always left with pennies galore anod virtually nothing to do with them (besides save them up for rolling later, or rare use at a cash register). so what gives? why dont vending machines take pennies? i cant tell you how many times ive been 10 cents short because it wont take them, haha.

A vending machine has specific spots to accept either bills or coins. When it becomes filled up it can not accept any more bills or coins until it is emptied and the money is collected. Each coin has a separate designated spot, such as dime nickel and quarter. Therefore I believe if there was a spot for a penny, the designated spot to hold pennies would fill up simply from two purchases.

simple explanation: coins are heavy. If you have to pay a dollar for something, if you can’t use pennies, you will use at the very least, 1/5 of the coins you might otherwise use( as far as i know there’s no 2 cents coin in American currency, right? ) That means the machines fill up less quickly, and the guy who has to collect it, has less work to do. All in all it saves money. Also, pennies are significantly smaller in some currencies than the other coins, so much so, that they would have to change the dynamics of the machine a lot to allow it to accept pennies. And finally, if a machine accepts pennies, then the possibilities for change become more complex, which means more effort programing a more advanced internal counter/ calculator to distribute change.
so, to save all that effort, they don’t take pennies.

imagine…trying to deal with pennys. The cost of making the machine is also a factor. I dont like vending machines. Some many are designed to steal people money. On Rt 684 in New York Rest area I would watch about 5 people every 10 minutes put money in them and because the machine was empty it would keep there money. They would fill them early on friday and leave that way till monday.
I am not sure who owned them but to be in a state rest area..I am sure somebody was connected to someone important. I saw this happen every weekend because i would drive to NYC to deliver grocerys.

no, the vendors make more money by rounding to the nearest nickel. besides, the machines don’t have enough storage to hold a lot of pennies.
only banks really have to accept them now.

The storage and change point people made makes sense, but the main reason is it’s too easy to substitute slugs for pennies.

probably because they dont want people putting in 80 pennies. would you want 20 pennies as change if you put in a dollar
