Vending machines are only profitable in areas where the product is set at a 3 or 4 to 1 profit margin. Population and age factor into the profit equation as well. A friend of mine had a route with 6 cities in a 100 mile radius and 18 machines and was only getting about $800 a week. By the time he paid for more supplies, fuel, house, food and utilities he ended up owing more than he was making and had to stop the business and mark it down as a tax loss. Most of the vendors selling relatively unknown or little known products end up losing out especially if they are dealing with a supplier. Usually the only person who makes any money at all is the supplier. If I were you I'd look into other avenues for making money.

- Find locations with high people traffic. You need to actually visit the sites and see the people traffic for yourself. Are there any vending machines in that location? Are they doing well?
- Make sure your locations are in as short a route as possible. Fuel, parking costs eat into your profit not to mention the time you spend travelling from one place to another.
Depending on this business full time may not be ideal for you especially if you have a family. Running part-time or weekends with a limited number of machines might just work out and give you a tidy EXTRA income source.

With the cost of gas on the rise make sure the route is cost effective.
