early 1880s, first commercial coin-operated vending machines were introduced in London, England and dispensed post cards. English publisher and bookshop owner, Richard Carlisle invented a vending machine for selling books, around the same time.

I believe the Romans had a holy water dispenser, you inserted a coin and got a small amount of holy water, it was basically a drum with a cork and a lever, when the coin landed in the lever, it opened the cork, the coin rolled off, and then closed.
