Convenience stores don’t have to maintain a vending machine.
It costs more at a vending machine because the company who ownsthe vending machine needs a profit too. It’s just how the business world goes.
The cheapest way to get a soda is to buy one at the Coke plant in Atlanta.
They have vending machines because some people are too lazy to go to the convenience store to buy one. They are at a rest area or workplace and want a coke. No Convenience stores around to supply one for them so the vending machine is the only resort.

You have to pay for the upkeep, running costs, the constant refilling and convenience.

You’re paying for the convenience of a soda machine. The company has to pay for the electricity to run the machine, so naturally it will cost slightly more for the product.
